On the morning of June 27th, 1864. Three federal brigrades would launch an assault against entrenched Confederates on Pigeon Hill. These Federal Brigades were under the command of Brigadier General Giles Smith, Brigadier General Charles Walcutt, and Brigadier General Joseph Lightburn of Morgan Smith’s Division. This portion of the federal line would launch this assault soon after 8a.m. Of these brigades, Giles Smith's Brigade would assault directly up Pigeon Hill and encounter Confederate skirmishers of Brigadier General Francis Cockrell's Missouri Brigade. Smith's Brigade would consist of the 111th Illinois, 116th Illinois, 57th Ohio, 55th Illinois, 127th Illinois, and the 6th Missouri.
It was here that the Federal 6th Missouri would brush aside skirmishers of the Confederate 2nd Missouri and assault headlong into the rebel 3/5th Missouri Infantry. A rare occurace where men from the same state would take part in close combat.
